SISO Update

The restart of trade shows continues around the globe as COVID-19 restrictions ease and vaccinations rise. On June 28, Mobile World Congress (MWC) opened in Barcelona, becoming the first major event to be held in Europe since the pandemic. GSMA reported 120,000 people accessed #MWC21 Barcelona across virtual platforms and physically at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via, with 20,000 attending in person June 28-July 1. SISO is producing a case study on MWC, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out the links below to SISO's video coverage from the event.

SISO Activities

Roundtable

SISO is partnering with Freeman and mdg to produce an Executive Roundtable at NY Now, which is produced by SISO member Emerald. NY Now will be first trade show since the pandemic to be held at Javits Center in New York. The roundtable is scheduled for 1-4:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 9. The program is currently being finalized, so stay tuned for an email invitation with the details to come.

Case Studies

On July 8, SISO and UFI published a Case Study: Las Vegas Market. The white paper takes a deeper dive into how International Market Centers produced the Las Vegas Market, the first event at its new Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas and the first major trade show in Las Vegas in more than one year.

As you get ready to return to live events, we encourage you to check out the recent SISO/UFI White Papers on how SISO members have successfully produced events during the pandemic. Since last October, SISO has published seven case studies for members to use as a playbook for the return to live events.

To accompany the white papers, SISO has produced video case studies on the return of live events. Watch the Deeper Dive into World of Concrete with Dan Assor and Danica Tormohlen.

Events Industry Commentator and Consultant Dan Assor produced a broadcast with Danica Tormohlen from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Here's a link to coverage from the show.

Assor hosts topical discussions with event, exhibition and business professionals on The Dan Assor Podcast, In Conversation With, which is sponsored by SISO. Members can subscribe to The Dan Assor Podcast from any of these channels: YouTubeFacebookLinkedInSpotifyApple and Twitter.

As a preview of what's to come in the case study on Mobile World Congress, check out our on-site video interviews with GSMA CEO John Hoffman and GSMA CMO Stephanie Lynch-Habib.

Alliances

ECA

ECA continues to actively advocate for the business events industry's policy priorities in Washington, DC.

Hospitality and Commerce Job Recovery Act (HCJRA)

Support for the HCJRA continues to grow. There are currently seven co-sponsors of the legislation in the Senate and 90 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. In the coming days and weeks, ECA and its coalition partners will be pushing the bill's sponsors to push for the inclusion of the business events tax credit part of the HCJRA in any forthcoming budget reconciliation or infrastructure package that Congress takes up between now and the end of the year.

Pandemic Risk Insurance Act (PRIA)

ECA recently joined the Business Continuity Coalition (BCC), a group of companies and associations that support a terrorism insurance backstop-style program for pandemic risk. This is critical for returning communicable disease coverage to event-cancellation insurance. At this time, ECA expects legislation to be introduced in the House of Representatives later this summer. ECA will continue to work closely with BCC, the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and others in support of PRIA-like legislation to support SISO members.

International travel

Progress is anticipated in mid/late July with regard to lifting inbound entry restrictions to the U.S. There is growing political pressure in both countries to begin easing U.S.-Canada border restrictions beginning on July 21, and lockdown easing in the U.K. (currently anticipated for July 19) may begin the process of reopening the U.S.-U.K. transatlantic travel corridor. ECA continues to call on the Biden Administration to urgently lift border closures in key geographies as soon as possible.

EIC

The Events Industry Council (EIC) launched Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC) Programme, an online certification that covers a variety of topics related to sustainability, social impact and event management. To earn certification, event professionals must complete 16 online course modules.

For a limited time, discounts will be available for individuals who currently hold the Sustainable Event Professional Certificate or who have been adversely impacted by COVID-19.

U.S. Travel

  • Allow expedited entry into the U.S. for fully vaccinated individuals from low-risk countries.
  • Ease entry restrictions by July 15, 2021, when the U.S. is forecast to achieve widespread immunity and sustained declines in infections a...
